ROOM MEASURING BASICS
Tools you will need:

Metal Measuring Tape (at least 25 ft.)

Grid Paper (not required but very helpful!)

Pencil
-
Sharpie
Step 1: Draw the shape of the room from a bird's eye view.
Step 2: Measure the room length, width and height of ceiling.
Step 3: Draw in any doors, windows, or openings, making sure to measure:​​​

From the wall to the inside of the casing, not the trim.​
-
The height and width of the doors and windows.
-
Distance between your floor and the bottom of the window sill.

The size of the trim around your doors and windows.
Step 3: Draw in additional details, including appliances and built-in features such as:

Outlet/Switch locations
-
Radiator/floor vent placements and measurements
-
Fireplace/Mantel placement and measurements
-
Islands
-
Bump-outs or bump-ins
-
Stairs
-
Bay Windows
-
Wainscoting
